Curl Up, Exhale, Heal: Healing That Feels Like Talking to a Friend

A Different Kind of Therapy Experience

Starting therapy can feel intimidating—but at Cope & Calm Counseling, it’s more like talking to someone who truly gets you. Imagine chatting with your mom’s best friend or that wise, kind auntie who’s warm, grounded, and always knows how to listen.

We use a blend of Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)—two approaches that help you understand yourself deeply while learning practical ways to shift patterns that no longer serve you. But before we get into the “how,” let’s talk about the “feel.”

The Vibe: Cozy, Calm, and Completely You

You don’t need to come in with a perfect plan or a list of talking points. Some sessions focus on specific events from the week; others flow more organically—and honestly, those can be the most healing. When we aren’t reacting to what just happened, we can be proactive, exploring the roots of your patterns and creating new ways of being.

If you’re coming in person, help yourself to coffee, tea, or snacks in our waiting room before your session. Our office is designed to feel calm and cozy—you’re welcome to curl up with a blanket, take off your shoes, and get comfy like the lovely neurodivergent pretzel you are.

If you’re joining us online, you’ll receive a secure, HIPAA-compliant video link two days before your appointment (and again ten minutes before). Just click to join from wherever you feel most comfortable—your couch, your car, or your favorite quiet corner.

The First Few Sessions: Assessment and Connection

Therapy always begins with an assessment period. During this time, we’re getting to know each other—you’re sharing your story, and we’re helping you make sense of your symptoms, stressors, and patterns.

At Cope & Calm, we believe that all coping makes sense in the context in which it developed. Every behavior, thought, or feeling once had a purpose. Together, we’ll identify those patterns and explore what’s ready to shift.

Once we understand what’s happening beneath the surface, we’ll collaborate on your goals. We’ll explain our approach and make sure you feel good about each step. If you have ideas or preferences, we welcome them—we’ll talk through the pros and cons together and follow your lead.

How Therapy Progresses

Many clients begin to notice new coping skills within the first few weeks. As therapy continues, we dive deeper—exploring family patterns, personality strengths, and coping habits. Over time, those insights begin to integrate into your daily life in powerful, lasting ways.

  • With IFS, we’ll explore your inner “parts”—the anxious one, the perfectionist, the caretaker, the avoider—and help each one feel understood, supported, and less burdened.

  • With CBT, we’ll identify unhelpful thought patterns and learn how to reframe them so they support your growth and peace instead of fueling stress.

These approaches complement each other beautifully: IFS provides the why, and CBT helps you practice the how.

You Don’t Have to Have It All Figured Out

You can come in with a topic in mind—or none at all. You can show up tired, messy, uncertain, or curious. We’ll meet you where you are, gently guiding the process and creating a space that feels safe enough to explore what’s underneath.

Because therapy isn’t about being “fixed.”
It’s about being understood.
